WHAT IS Equate Allergy Relief USED FOR?

Equate is Walmart’s in-house generic equivalent to Benadryl. It’s used to combat all of the basic symptoms that have come to be associated with allergies. You can also take it if you are reacting to new allergens or are dealing with the common cold. While a lot of people prefer to use Benadryl because of its ability to help you sleep, Equate Allergy Relief is also available in a non-drowsy formula.

HOW DOES EQUATE ALLERY RELIEF WORK?

The active ingredient in this medication is diphenhydramine HCl. This is a chemical that blocks histamines from permeating through your system. This makes Equate into an antihistamine, part of a group of medications sold over the counter and through prescriptions to combat allergy symptoms.

Equate is used to fight off several symptoms. If you are experiencing a runny nose, sneezing, or a scratchy cough, Equate will help to alleviate these symptoms. The medicine can also be used for allergy attacks, including breakouts of hives, development of rashes, and new reactions to previously unknown allergens. In some cases, Equate can be used to treat mild cases of Parkinson’s disease.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF?

Allergy Relief and all of the other Equate medications are available nationwide at Walmart. With over 11,000 stores across the United States, you are almost guaranteed to have one open near you if you need allergy medicine. If you’re unable to locate a Walmart near you, it is available on the Walmart website. You can have a box shipped directly to you or choose a nearby store for pickup at no extra cost.

Many Walmarts are open 24 hours, so you can visit a store no matter what time your symptoms begin

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

A box of 100 25mg Equate tablets sells for $4 at Walmart and on Walmart.com. If you only need one box, it’s much more cost-efficient to get it at a store. You’ll need to pay shipping when ordering from the website if your total order falls under $25.

Testing Equate requires the measurement of several different factors. The regular formula was used for this review to avoid any inability to report for accuracy.

TAKING WITH FOOD

Equate can be used with or without food. If you wake up in the middle of the night and are enduring a sneezing or coughing fit, you don’t have to worry about scouring the fridge for yogurt or some fruit to combine with your Equate medicine. Just using water is enough to offer you the relief you need from a single dose.

SLEEP AID

Using the regular formula of Equate, it becomes obvious that it works well as a sleeping aid. Within a half hour, you will feel a different kind of relaxation coursing through your body. It doesn’t feel natural, but it will give you the advantages you need to help you sleep.

If you are thinking about using Equate as nothing more than a sleep aid, you should look elsewhere. Equate also sells a dedicated water medicine that doesn’t have any of the anti-allergy or antihistamine properties contained in its allergy relief formula.

USE AS AN ANTI-ALLERGY AID

Taking Equate helps to give you comfort as you sleep. Even though there are other medications available for sleeping aid, this one works in combination with several anti-allergy properties.

It isn’t recommended for those who don’t want to feel completely knocked out during the night. If you need to be on call for a job and have to fight through sickness, you should definitely stick to a non-drowsy formula. Just two tablets are enough to make you feel drowsy, especially if you aren’t used to taking over-the-counter medications.

WHAT KIND OF SIDE EFFECTS CAN I EXPECT?

As is often the case with any type of drug, Equate comes with possible side effects. While everyone reacts differently, the symptoms listed below are all of the known side effects in taking the recommended dosage.

DRY MOUTH

Taking Equate can result in feeling parched and thirsty. It’s recommended to consume an entire glass of water with a dose of Equate to help against this symptom. If it persists, keep some water by your bed.

SLEEPINESS/DROWSINESS

One of the main results of the regular Equate Allergy Relief formula is the ability to help you sleep. This can be a benefit or a problem depending on how you want to treat yourself. If you aren’t planning to go anywhere and need some sleep, stick to the regular ingredients. Equate can also be purchased with a non-drowsy formula if you prefer.

HEADACHES

Doses of Equate Allergy Relief have been reported to occasionally cause headaches.

DIFFICULTY IN URINATION AND PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT

In some cases, older males have noted a slight enlargement of the prostate when they take Allergy Relief at the recommended dose. Similarly, you may experience issues with urination when continuing to take allergy medication.

WHEN SHOULD I NOT TAKE EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF?

While you can handle all of the side effects that come with Equate Allergy Relief, there are some cases where you absolutely should not take the medication.

First, do not take it with alcohol. This applies to most medications in general, but the combination of alcohol and Equate’s sedative properties will compound the drowsiness. If you have consumed alcohol and experience allergy symptoms, go with the non-drowsy formula.

There is a potential for serious injury and illness if you overdose.  If you begin to experience confusion or extreme sleepiness, get someone to take you to the nearest medical treatment facility. This will also be necessary if you have a seizure or begin to hallucinate.

The possibility exists for you to have an allergic reaction to the medicine contained in Equate. If taking the tablets causes you to have difficulty breathing or some noticeable swelling of your lips or face, discontinue taking the medicine.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID WHILE TAKING EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF?

Do not take any more than the recommended dosage printed on the packaging or bottle. The number of tablets for an adult is there for a reason, and the maximum daily dosage for Equate Allergy Relief is 300mg. Any more than this and you will risk overdosing, resulting in serious health problems that could lead to hospitalization.

If you are currently on monoamine oxidase inhibitors, do not take any Equate medication. If you cause the drugs to interact, a severe case of side effects can occur. Discontinue any use of the inhibitors for 14 days before considering the usage of Equate.

Stay away from driving or operating any heavy machinery while using Equate. The drowsiness you experience while taking the medicine will impair your ability to move on your feet, so forget about driving to the store for any last-minute pickups. Once you take allergy relief medication, you need to be sure you are in for the night.

HOW DOES EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF COMPARE TO BENADRYL?

Equate uses the same active ingredient seen in Benadryl. The use of each didn’t show any noticeable difference during the review, making Equate the much cheaper and better choice. The only time you might consider getting Benadryl instead is if Walmart is closed and you need relief immediately. In this case, you might find Benadryl or other allergy medications available at a nearby convenience store

SHOULD I USE EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF?

Choosing Equate Allergy Relief depends on what you want to get out of your treatment. If you need an immediate combination of a sleep aid and allergy medicine, Equate is a cheap brand that might provide you with some temporary relief. It works quickly to knock you out and calm most of the symptoms that would keep you up during the night.

Unfortunately, Allergy Relief suffers from the same drawbacks as Benadryl or any other allergy medication on the market. While it might temporarily relieve the symptoms of allergies, it will not do anything to cure the underlying allergy itself.

It’s difficult to give a recommendation for a medicine that is so chock-full of side effects, too. Allergy Relief might give you a temporary stop to watery eyes, but do you really want a headache to replace it?

WHAT ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES TO EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF?

The Equate brand also sells a generic equivalent to Claritin. This is a different formula for allergy relief, with an active ingredient of loratadine for the antihistamine, and pseudoephedrine as a nasal decongestant. It’s recommended that you choose this formula if you’re looking for something a bit more focused on allergy symptoms that isn’t needed for multitasking with a sleep aid.

There are also the name brands Zyrtec and Allegra, all commercially available over the counter for allergy relief. They all come with their own set of potential side effects, just like Allergy Relief.

CONCLUSION AND FINAL THOUGHTS ON EQUATE ALLERGY RELIEF

If you are desperate for allergy relief and cannot find anything else in your cabinet, Equate Allergy Relief is a quick and cheap medicine to keep on hand. It should not be your first choice in helping against allergy symptoms, and you might want to look into preventing attacks from happening. Taking Equate should be a last resort if you need to function the next day.

Check out the rest of Walmart or any other store for other drug options before you resort to Allergy Relief. You might find another drug option or opt for some homeopathic solutions if you prefer a natural relief. Equate comes through in a pinch, but ideally, it won’t be the first thing you reach for in the bathroom.
